Connecting a Teracom TCW242

Last edited: August 24th 2026

This guide explains how to publish data to Inuatek Data Collection Cloud (DCC) using MQTT over TLS with client certificates.

Note: Support for Teracom TCW242 is available from DCC release 7.3 and later.

The guide covers:

  1. Create device in DCC
  2. Setup Teracom TCW242
  3. Verify data in DCC

Before You Begin

Ensure:

  • Access to the Teracom TCW242.
  • Data intended for DCC communication is defined and mapped.
  • Outbound port 8883 is open for internet communication.

Step 1 — Create device in DCC

Start by creating the device in the DCC as described in the
MQTT Introduction Guide.

When a device is created in DCC, a .zip file is generated containing the needed certificates required for TLS communication:

The Teracom TCW242, doesn't provide timestamps in the MQTT-payload, hence the use of cloud timestamp is required.

Step 2 — Setup Teracom TCW242

Upload certificates

Start by logging into the Teracom TCW242, upload the received certificates under Administration > Certificates

Mqtt enable

Ensure that the certificates is enabled by checking both checkboxes once uploaded.

Uploading new certificates will require a restart of the Teracom TCW242.

Setup MQTT Services

Open op the MQTT page under Services > MQTT

Mqtt settings setup

  1. MQTT Service: Enable the MQTT service.

  2. Payload Format: Select JSON.

  3. JSON Payload Structure: Select All.

  4. Connection Security: Select TLS/SSL.

  5. Server: Enter the hostname assigned to your device. The device-specific hostname can be found in the README.md file included in the downloaded certificate package.

  6. Port: Enter 8883. Ensure that outbound communication through port 8883 is allowed on the network.

  7. Publish Interval: Specify how often the device should publish data to the MQTT broker. The permitted interval ranges from 1 minute to 48 hours.

  8. Base Topic: Enter the topic configured in DCC. The Teracom TCW242 automatically adds a trailing / (slash) to the base topic.

  9. Manage Certificates: Use this shortcut to manage the TLS certificates installed on the device.

  10. Test: Test the connection to the MQTT broker.

Add samplepoints to the MQTT payload

The Teracom TCW242 can publish data from four types of sections:

  • Channels
  • Alarms
  • Relays
  • Modbus relays

Each section can contain several items, and each item contains a parameter representing the published value.

Both the section name and the item name are added to the MQTT base topic. However, DCC only uses the item name as the sample point name. The section name is therefore not included in the DCC sample point name.

It is still recommended that each section is given a descriptive name that clearly identifies the type of data it contains.

The image below shows an example using the Channels section.

Channels settings setup

This configuration generates the following three sample points in DCC:

  • WaterTemperature
  • WaterPressure
  • WaterLevel

Note: The Publish state (JSON: s) option is also enabled for WaterLevel. A DCC sample point can only have one associated value. If both v and s are present, DCC uses the value from v. If v is not present, DCC uses the state from s.

Step 3 — Verify Data in DCC

Follow the DCC verification steps described in the MQTT Introduction Guide:

Verify:

  • Device connects to broker
  • Signals appear in DCC
  • Values update regularly
  • Timestamps update correctly

Troubleshooting

General problems may be caused by the following:

ProblemPossible Cause
MQTT not connectedNetwork blocking port 8883
TLS failureWrong certificate or key
No data visibleTopic mismatch or logger disabled
No updatesSample time too large
